You’ve Built Your Domain Portfolio, Now What?

You've Built Your domain portfolio

We often talk about building your portfolio on this blog. Building your portfolio means buying domains that you may not use yourself, but hope to sell some day at an increased price point. With many affordable gTLDs, building your portfolio can be cost effective. But what do you do once you have a sizable number of domains in your domain portfolio? Read on for the possibilities.

Do Your Research

Why did you purchase the domains you did? Some may have been a price too good to pass up, others just seemed like something people would be interested in. Now that you have a few domains, it’s time to do research on them. Who might be interested? What have similar domains been sold for recently? What industry could most benefit from your domain? Knowing everything you can about your domain will set your up for the next steps. This research should be thorough, but can easily be done with an internet search engine and some creativity.

Set Your Price

Now that you know more about your domain and what others are selling it for, it’s time to set your price. This price can be flexible, but it’s important to have a good starting place. If you don’t have a price in mind, it’s easy to get taken advantage of by someone making you too low of an offer. Be flexible in your pricing but always know what a domain is worth to you.

Promote

If you’re looking to sell some of your domains from your portfolio, consider creating a simple website where all of your domains are listed. You can promote this website or highlight individual domains. Domain message boards and social media are some great places to find others interested in your portfolio. Remember you can promote one domain, a group of domains, or your entire portfolio. It’s up to you to decide which domains to keep and which to sell.

Wait

Sometimes we make a bad bet on domain–something that seemed popular at the time may no longer be so. If you’re a got a domain or two that you thought would increase in value, but is stagnating, then just wait. It’s a good idea to think in the long term with domains, just like you might do with the stock market. You may hit it big right away with a stock or domain, but many times you’re better off waiting it out until you can get the right price for your original purchase. Don’t panic if your domain isn’t increasing in value as you’d like, if you can afford to keep it, wait it out until you can get close to the price you’re looking for.

Use

Why not use some of the domains in your portfolio? You can use them to promote yourself, or like discussed above, use one to promote your portfolio. If after a year you don’t think you’ll use a domain and won’t make money back selling it, let your renewal lapse and let it go.

Building your portfolio is a smart idea, but remember to look forward to what you will do with it some day. You don’t need to use all of your domains in the same way, but be sure to have a plan before and after you purchase new domains for your portfolio.

Identify a Strategy Before You Buy Your Domain

Identify a Strategy before you buy your domain BL

With affordable pricing and innumerable options, it can be easy to want to buy every new .TLD out there. But do you know what you will do with them? Having a plan for your domain is important, because it allows your to get the best value and ensure a return on your domains, whether that’s traffic and a thriving online business, or a great sale price for your domain. Read on for tips on developing the best strategy to use to buy your domain.

How Popular is the Domain

When you’re looking to buy a domain, do research into the popularity of that domain. As new TLDs become available, some are gaining more interest than others. Like many things in life, the more popular a domain is the more likely you will be able to sell it in the future or increase the value of it. TLDs can be fun and unique but if you’re interested in getting value or selling in the future, research which are the most popular new TLDs. Industry, length of TLD and marketing will affect how popular a new GTLD is. Do your research before buying.

What is Your Sale Price

If you’re buying TLDs to sell down the line, you should have a sale price in mind. This sale price is what you would accept for your domain. This will help you understand what if a good value for you for a domain. What is the right price for someone else, may not be what is right for you. Is your sale price way above the current cost of the domain now? Understand that you may have to hold on to the domain for a period of time before you can earn that price. Is your sale price close to what you’re paying for it today? You can expect to get that sale price soon with the right marketing moves.

Who Would Use the Domain

A domain that is important to you, may not be important to someone else. Consider the market for the domain you’re buying. if you want to eventually sell your domain, versatility is your friend. Consider more generic domain names that refer to industries rather than to proper names. Ask people in your industry what type of domain name they would be interested in, this will give you an idea of the market for the domain you just purchased if you decide to sell.

How Long Will You Own the Domain

Knowing when you want to sell a domain is an important factor to consider before purchasing. If you want to sell your domain right away, why are you buying it? The longer you are able to hold onto a domain, the more likely you will get the sale price you want for it when you do decide to sell. A domain is an investment and if you can let your investment mature or wait until others are interested, you stand to have a much better financial return.

With the low cost of TLDs it’s easy to want to buy them all. You can buy as many domains as you want, just consider how you will use them before your buy. Smart domain buying is better for your business and ensure better returns in the future.

An Introduction to Affiliate Marketing with DCC

Introduction to Affiliate Marketing

As a member of Domain Cost Club, you can take part in the affiliate program offered by the club. Are you new to affiliate marketing or unsure what it is?

Affiliate marketing is a marketing program where members, like DCC members, are rewarded for each referral who becomes a member. Affiliate marketing makes sense for many people because it’s a way to get paid for something you already do. When you like a product or service, you tell your friends, right? With affiliate marketing you get rewarded for those friends, or referrals, who decide to use that recommended product or service. Want to know how the affiliate program works for DCC? Below is our introduction to affiliate marketing for complete beginners and affiliate veterans who are simply new to DCC!

Referrals

As we said above, referrals are those people that you recommend DCC to, who then become members. To be counted as a referral, these people must sign up for a new membership. So how do you get credit for a referral? When you sign up with DCC, DCC will generate a page just like www.domaincostclub.com except it is your referal page. When you link to your referral page, people can sign up for the same DCC products you did, but now give you credit for the sign up.

Your Network

As you refer more people to DCC and they refer people, this begins to build your network. With affiliate marketing, you earn referral income from people you’ve directly referred as well as people they have referred. To imagine how this works, think of how people are connected to a network, you know someone directly, and they know someone, who knows two people, who knows more people. You’re not directly connected to those people that are on the far edge of your network, but you are connected through your own connections. How does this apply to earning commissions with DCC? It simply means that DCC rewards you for the people you share DCC with and then keeps rewarding you as the network of people you have referred continues to build out, even when you’re not directly referring anyone.

Matrix

The word matrix may sound a little overwhelming, but it’s actually a simple complex that helps to explain how your network makes you money.  A matrix is a way to organize those referrals we talked about so that everyone earns the most money possible. DCC uses a 4 x 7  matrix, with 7 being the number of levels in the network.  That means you will receive a commission for your referrals, their referrals, and theirs all the way down through 7 levels. These levels of people are often referred to as your downline.

So where does the 4 come in? Everyone’s first level is made up of 4 people, once you hit that 4, the next person spills down onto the next level, building your downline. The best part of spillover is that this means people will spill onto your downline as the person who referred you fills up their first line. That’s even more referral income, this time coming from the person who referred you!

Payouts

Payouts are the monthly or semimonthly way DCC gets you the commissions you earned off of your referrals and network. If you’re a club member, you can have your commissions paid out monthly. As a Lifetime Charter Member, your commissions can get paid more frequently at a semi-monthly plan.

Bonuses

On top of your commissions, you also have the chance to earn bonuses. For each person you refer, you not only earn commision but you earn a one time referral bounty. Learn about current bonuses here: https://www.domaincostclub.com/affiliates.dhtml

Affiliate marketing is an easy way to earn extra income for something you’re already doing. Decide if you want to be an affiliate and begin building extra income right away.

Wholesale Pricing Factors

Wholesale pricing

As you browse around the DCC grid of TLDs and begin to search specific domain pricing you may notice something–certain TLDs are much cheaper than others. Unlike with domain names where it’s easy to see why some are more expensive and desirable than others, figuring out what affects pricing of TLDs can be a little different. If you want to know more about where wholesale pricing comes from, read on.

Demand

Just like many other industries, domain prices are driven by demand. How many other people are interested in the same TLD can push the price up or keep it low. This is why .com had a corner on the industry for so long, demand was high and so were prices. As country code TLDs became available for people outside of those countries, prices of these domains became affordable. Now with ICANN’s release of many generic TLDs, prices can be even lower. Still with these gTLDs many are in demand, so do your research, but know you’re getting the best price possible with DCC.

Length

Some TLDs now available are short like more traditional TLDs, examples of this are .bar, .ink, and .me. These TLDs may cost more because they offer a shorter overall domain name. TLDs .claims, .guidance, and .finance are also popular but can be less expensive than other shorter TLDs simply because people want a shorter domain name. However, if you dig deeper, you can see that long TLDs like .accountants are much more expensive than shorter ones, the reason for this is in our next section–use.

Use

Use is a big factor in dictating domain prices. TLDs like .XXX are associated with a specific use and industry, and pricing reflects that. TLDs like .accountants also have a specific use and can be pricey. This makes sense as accountants are needed and often searched for online and many have their own business. This drives up prices related to demand, as well as use. Consider use when purchasing your domain but also when considering to sell it, this makes it easy to position your domain for sale.

Release

ICANN has slowly worked through releasing new TLDs over the past few years, and as they are released, some registrars offer special pricing on them. DCC sometimes offers special pricing on these newly released TLDs as well. As a TLD ages, prices may fluctuate as well. Popularity of TLDs affect pricing as they age.

Registrar

New TLDs are released as people apply for them to be released. Often times, the person or company who applies for these new TLDs becomes the registrar. The registrar then controls the sales of those domains and sets pricing. While the registrar will factor in many of the above criteria, they can set the price at what they want. This means some domains may be overpriced or underpriced. As time goes on, registrars may choose to lower their price to move more domains or set it better to the market. While DCC cannot control registrar pricing, we do not add additional fees or money on top of these prices. When purchasing your domain through DCC, you will get the same price DCC paid the registrar, but with more benefits.
